C1

Advanced English and Exam Preparation

Level: C1
Lesson length: 90 minutes
Format: Online
Programme: Full academic year, October 2026 – June 2027
Frequency: Twice a week

The C1 course is designed for learners who want to develop their English at an advanced level and prepare for a recognised C1 language examination.

At C1 level, learners continue to develop all key language skills. They work with more complex written and spoken texts, extend their vocabulary and strengthen their command of grammar. In speaking and writing, they learn to develop arguments, express and support their views clearly, and adapt their language to different contexts and purposes.

As with B2, the programme combines comprehensive language development with exam preparation. At C1, greater emphasis is placed on understanding nuance, developing and supporting arguments, using an appropriate register, and producing extended, well-structured spoken and written responses.

First semester – developing C1 English

During the first semester, the main focus is on systematically developing the language skills required at C1 level.

Reading – working with longer and more complex texts, understanding both main ideas and detailed information, identifying the writer’s viewpoint, and interpreting meaning in context.

Listening – understanding extended speech and conversations, identifying detailed information, and recognising speakers’ opinions, attitudes and intentions.

Speaking – developing fluency and confidence, expressing ideas clearly, building and supporting arguments, explaining and defending a point of view, and responding appropriately to the views and arguments of others.

Writing – producing extended, coherent and well-organised texts, developing arguments, and selecting an appropriate style and register for different text types and purposes.

Grammar & Vocabulary – extending vocabulary and grammatical range and developing greater accuracy and flexibility in both spoken and written English.

Second semester – intensive exam preparation

During the second semester, exam preparation becomes a major focus of the course. Learners continue to develop their English at C1 level while spending more time working with the exam format and exam-style tasks.

Learners develop a detailed understanding of the exam structure, task types and assessment criteria. They practise strategies for the different components of the examination and learn to identify what individual tasks require.

The programme also focuses on planning responses, time management and analysing errors. At this stage, learners need not only a strong command of English but also the ability to apply their language skills effectively within the requirements of the examination.

Exam preparation remains part of the wider language-development programme. The aim is not simply to master exam strategies, but to develop the confidence and independence needed to use English effectively at an advanced level.

Programme objectives

The course aims to develop C1-level English across all key language skills and prepare learners for the requirements of an appropriate recognised language examination.

Learners develop the ability to communicate confidently in English, express complex ideas clearly, build and support arguments, and adapt their language to different contexts, purposes and types of communication.
